Maria Papadimitriou - A man fom south
Maria Papadimitriou, A man from the South, Cagliari Capitale Italiana della Cultura 2015

After 80 years since Antonio Gramsci disappearance, the exhibition Echoes from the South weaves a red yarn to connect the researchers of different artists.

Indeed, all their works have been inspired by the subaltern condition, both animal, social, political or gender ones as a field of researchers, passions, visions, a place where to resist, act, imagine future cities.

A condition of fragility and resistance emerges from the different languages of these poets of praxis.

In their attempts of reading and transforming the reality, they all faced and exposed themselves to critical socio-political contexts such as fights against dictatorships, environmental critics, claim and the creation of physical and poetic spaces for democratic praxis. Their work can be read as plural and practical annotations to the contemporaneity for writing a new history.

Antonio Gramsci thoughts cross the exhibition path of CARTEC as a score of echoes, resurfaced from his words into the artworks.

The relation between art and activism is here translated in many different ways: from the reading of the revolutionary power of imagination in the work of Claudia Losi to the animal and vegetal resistance to domestication in the Andreco and Maria Papadimitriou installations. From the generous thoughts of Thomas Hirschhorn about the artistic and political action within the Gramsci Monument to the straight political actions by Tania Bruguera, Jonas Staal, Giovanni Columbu (Laboratorio di comunicazione militante), without forgetting the claiming of freedom practices by the Austrian collective Gelitin.
