South Talks-2017

7 September Public Gardens

8-10 September Teatro Massimo Terrace

The talks will be both in Italian and English

South Talks is a philosophical and artistic symposium that explores the concept of South as a poetic space, a state of mind, a praxis of resistance far from the hegemonic system.

Local and international artists and curators are invited to talk and share their practices, and through which, trace an analysis of the social and contemporary art issues.

Main Themes

  • Act, react, decolonize: The Southern question today
  • New pedagogies: critic to the hegemonic thought
  • Theory of Praxis: social agency and aesthetic practice

Thursday, September 7th | Public Gardens

8 pm | Irit Rogoff (Goldsmiths, University of London, UK): Singularising Knowledge

In the past we assumed we knew what ‘education’ was about; an encounter with the world at another level through a set of personal transformations. We also knew what ‘research’ was about; an investigation into the world around us in order to ground bodies of knowledge. With the advent of ever more virulent neo liberal managerialism and rampant cognitive capitalism we have had to constantly revise our understanding of both, so as not to lose their capacity for critical and resistant invention. If we pursue a model of knowledge as singularity, never universal and constantly reinventing its alliances with far flung insights, practices, and protocols, we might have a form of learning that is not so easily captive by dominant cultures of evaluation and prediction.

9 pm | Introduction. Praxis and  artistic paths in dialogue

Screening The Ashes of Pasolini

The Gramsci Trilogy is a series of project that I have dedicated to Antonio Gramsci, one of the most extraordinary thinkers of the 20th Century. Gramsci is one of the most lucid and illuminated intellectuals of our times. His radical political thinking coupled with his formidable cultural analysis are, in my view, more necessary than ever today to confront the new  fascism threatening in the 21st century.” Alfredo Jaar
